Tinta Amarela or Trincadeira is a red wine grape that is commonly used in Port wine production. The grape is noted for its dark colouring. Its use in the Douro region has been increasing in recent years.[1]It is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in Portugal. It is the oldest and most widely planted grape variety in the Alentejo region, where it is called Trincadeira. Being more suited to a dryer climate and faster draining soils, the Breede Valley, bordering on the Karoo region of South Africa, is good for cultivating this grape cultivar.
We at Boutique Barrels are privileged to have access to a small vineyard of Tinta Amarella in the district of Rawsonville. We ferment the wine to the lowest residual sugar levels possible, so with the typically higher sugar content when the berry is ripe, the wine tends to have a slightly higher alcohol content (around 14% ABV). We believe that these characteristics make this full-bodied, rich wine aromatic on the nose and leaving a long flavour on the pallet.
